Americans planning to travel overseas should learn about passports, visas, customs, immunizations, and other travel basics, to minimize difficulties and maximize their travel experience.
Handy tips for US tourists:
1. Read as much as possible about the countries in which you plan to travel including their history, culture, customs and politics. The U.S. Department of State provides brief Background Notes on 170 countries with information on their culture, history, geography, economy, government, and current political situation.
2. Most international airlines and Travel agents can supply travel brochures about the countries that they serve.
3. The Department of State also issues Travel Warnings and Public Announcements when it recommends deferral of travel by Americans to a country because of civil unrest, dangerous conditions, and terrorist activity which would pose significant risks to American travelers.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
Travel document requirements vary from country to country, but you will need the following: a U.S. passport or other proof of citizenship, plus a visa or a tourist card, if required by the country or countries that you will visit. You may also need evidence that you have enough money for your trip and/or have ongoing or return transportation tickets.
